Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ATKeys keyguards, ordering, and delivery.

Product & compatibility

What is a keyguard?

A keyguard is a sturdy overlay placed over a touchscreen device. It has a precise cutout for every button (or cell) on your communication board, and the raised edges around each one help you target and press cells accurately, without accidental hits.

Which devices and apps do you support?

We make keyguards for the full range of iPads, from the early models through to the latest Air and Pro. Because we build your keyguard directly from a screenshot of your own screen layout, it works with any AAC app — including TouchChat, Grid, TD Snap, Proloquo2Go and LAMP Words for Life.

Does the keyguard fit if my iPad is in a protective case?

Yes. When you order, tell us whether your iPad is in a case. Rather than covering the whole glass face, we cut the keyguard to fit the exact opening your case leaves, and the designer walks you through measuring it.

How does the keyguard attach to the screen?

It is held on by small reusable nanotextured adhesive pads. They grip through a microscopic surface texture, the way a gecko's foot does, rather than chemical glue, so they leave no sticky residue and can be lifted off and repositioned. If they pick up dust and lose grip, rinse them with water and a little neutral soap and the grip comes back.

What is the keyguard made of, and how do I clean it?

Each keyguard is made from a durable black PET plastic. It will not shatter dangerously the way rigid clear keyguards can, and it does not warp or soften in the heat of a sunny windowsill or a warm car. Clean both the keyguard and its pads with warm water and ordinary washing-up liquid.

Designing & ordering

How do I order a keyguard?

Upload a screenshot of your board, pick your iPad model, and tell us whether it is in a case. Fine-tune the layout in the browser editor, then print the 1:1 scale paper test to check the fit before you pay.

How do I take a screenshot of my board?

On an iPad with no Home button, press the Top button and Volume Up together. On an iPad with a Home button, press the Top button and the Home button together. You can also turn on AssistiveTouch under Settings → Accessibility → Touch for a one-tap screenshot button, or say "Hey Siri, take a screenshot".

How do I know it will fit before I pay?

Before checkout we generate a 1:1 scale PDF paper test. Print it at 100% scale (not "shrink to fit"), lay it over your screen, and check that every cutout lines up with your layout.

Pricing & institutional purchasing

How much does a keyguard cost?

Every keyguard is a flat £35, with UK tracked delivery included. There are no hidden fees, and no surcharge for a complicated board or a larger screen.

Can we pay by purchase order or invoice, for a school or NHS trust?

Yes. We work with schools, clinics and NHS trusts regularly. At checkout, choose to pay by invoice or bank transfer and enter your PO number, and we will issue a PDF invoice to forward to your finance team. Several keyguards can go on one invoice.

What is the Pay It Forward fund?

At checkout you can choose to add £5 to your order. We top it up with a further £1 so the next customer gets £6 off theirs. It is anonymous both ways, and goes straight towards making keyguards cheaper for the AAC community.

Delivery & returns

How fast will my order arrive?

We make your keyguard in the UK within 48 hours. Standard delivery is Royal Mail Tracked 48, included in the price, which is usually two to three working days. You can upgrade to Royal Mail Tracked 24 for £1 at checkout.

What is your returns policy?

Every keyguard is cut to the layout you approved, so once it is in production an order cannot be cancelled or returned for a change of mind. If it arrives damaged, or does not match the design you approved, email hello@atkeys.com within 30 days and we will send a replacement free of charge.

Accounts & privacy

Do I need an account to reorder or check my order?

No. To check progress or reorder, enter your email on the sign-in page and we will send you an instant sign-in link — no password to remember. From there you can reorder a previous design in one click, or edit it if your board has changed.

Is my screenshot kept private?

Yes. Your screenshots and board layouts are stored securely, and used only to design and make your keyguards. We never sell them, show them publicly, or share them with anyone else.

Still have a question? Email us at hello@atkeys.com and we'll help.
